After a back to back afternoon of "Julie & Julia" I decided I had to try Boeuf Bourguignon. I began by making Julia Child's beef stock. First time I've ever made beef stock. You start with beef bones. Also the first time I've ever cooked with these, and I'm not sure how I feel about them or skimming the skum.. - Here is the recipe
3 -4 lbs beef bones, meaty
3 carrots, scraped, broken in several pieces 2 medium onions, peeled, quartered 3 stalks celery, broken in several pieces
2 leeks, cleaned and cut into chunks
1 sprig thyme
2 fresh bay leaves
2 garlic cloves, unpeeled (More if you like)
2 whole cloves
6 -8 peppercorns
Directions: 1 Place the beef bones in a large heavy pot and cover with cold water by about two inches. 2 Bring to a simmer over medium heat and skim the sum which rises to the top--this should take about five minutes. 3 Add the remaining ingredients and more cold water so that everything is covered by at least an inch or two. 4 Bring the stock to a simmer again, skimming as necessary. 5 When the stock is simmering (Do NOT allow it to boil), partially cover and maintain at a very slow simmer for four to five hours. 6 If the water level gets too low, add boiling water to the pot. 7 Skim as necessary. 8 When the vegetables and the bones have given their all to the broth, strain the broth and discard the solids. 9 Set the stock, uncovered in the refrigerator until the fat has risen to the top and solidified. 10 Remove and discard the fat. 11 Taste the degreased stock (remembering it contains no salt) and if it is not strong enough, reduce it over medium heat. 12 When the stock is cold, store in the refrigerator for up to three days or in the freezer.

So for several weeks I've been wanting to start yet another project. I've been wanting to make candles for fall, finally I got my butt on the bus to the candle supply store in the University district.  Robbie taught me how to make candles years and years ago, let's not say how many, and introduced me to Zenith (click for the link to the site). They have all kinds of oils, wax, fragrance, and all kinds of stuff to  make bath and body stuff of your own. The other store he showed me unfortunately went out of business. Anyway, most of what you see is recycled wax. All you have to do is melt it and strain it through an old tee shirt.  All I have to say is bless the projects that have been keeping me busy and I think we all know why. Almost two months. Thank you Grae, you are truly heaven sent.

One of the projects I decided to do for my birthday. Throw Pillow covers.
The set up wasn't too bad for a novice, however if you use the same pattern
I suggest using a trim that is less thick unless you have a machine
that supports the thickness. This is the site where I found the pattern.

How To Sew A Throw Pillow Cover In 10 Easy Steps

I really need to dual cut things so they match up, cause pinning for me was a nightmare.

First try, not so bad, but the second almost got thrown out.
The finished product. I swear in the store the fabric looked green, which is
why the trim is a dark olive green.
Turns out ity 's the same color as the couch.

 The back seam.
Oh yeah, in case you haven't heard I bought a sewing machine
on overstock. Factory reconditioned Janome. Cheap!
Pretty basic, but if I get better I'll buy a better one.
